SMS Health Education in Lao PDR

Use GeoChat as a primary way for their headquarters to stay in touch with over 50 staff members.

Date: May 2011 — Present
Location: Lao PDR
Technology: GeoChat + Nuntium

We began working with Population Services International (PSI) in May 2011 to help them use GeoChat to improve their ability to distribute important health education information to over 1200 high risk individuals across Lao. We helped PSI to set up a local gateway through Nuntium, a tool designed to build robust and scalable messaging applications, so that they could easily run on a mobile android platform.

Before using GeoChat, PSI worked with a local telecommunications provider inside Lao to support their SMS communications. Using this system was incredibly difficult since each time PSI needed to send out information or add/remove a member from their list, they needed to contact the local telecommunications provider in order to have them make the changes. This dependent relationship made it increasingly difficult for PSI to have the freedom, flexibility and autonomy to manage this process.

Since PSI found GeoChat was easy to use and helpful, they expanded their use of the tool to support their own internal operations. Now they use GeoChat as a primary way for their headquarters to stay in touch with over 50 staff members.
