Animal Disease Surveillance System

Track trends and identify issues in significantly less time than before the system.

Date: 2009
Location: Cambodia
Technology: Custom Tool

We worked with the National Veterinary Research Institute (NaVRI) on their animal disease surveillance system, to develop a new prototype and conduct field evaluations of an automated national animal disease surveillance system using smartphones.
If a farmer or field worker noticed that some of their animals were falling ill, they could call this hotline to make a report. This automated hotline helps NaVRI to track event-based data about diseases, using a smartphone tracking system that connects with a database and triggers a field response.
With this system, NaVRI was able to track trends and identify issues in significantly less time than before the system. Increasing the speed in which they could identify trends and patterns from weeks to instantaneously significantly improved their ability to contain and respond to outbreaks. With a real time system, responders are better able to mitigate the negative affects to the economy and the livelihoods of farmers and families throughout the country.
